Avulsed permanent tooth

Replant as soon as possible — ideally within 15 minutes.

Hold the tooth by the crown only — never the root — and store it in milk if it can't be replanted straight away.

  1. Hold by the crown; rinse briefly with saline/milk if dirty, do not scrub the root.
  2. Replant immediately; if not possible store in milk, saline or HBSS (or patient's saliva).
  3. Splint flexible for 2 weeks.
  4. Closed apex: start root canal treatment within 2 weeks (IADT 2020).
  5. Systemic antibiotics are of questionable benefit (IADT); check tetanus status. Never replant avulsed primary teeth.
